Car Insurance Daewoo (Car Insurance). Why is my engine almost stalling? Why is my engine almost stalling? 1999 Corolla with 159,000 miles. The car was running great until a few months ago. After a number of large snow storms where the car was covered in snow on the street (here in NYC), the car starting showing problems when either just coming out of idle/park, while coming to a stop, or when idling at a light. (If I put the car in park, the shuddering of the engine stops and returns to normal). It would feel as if the engine was about to stop and then it would resume normal function after reaching a higher speed, only to show stalling symptoms again while approaching a stop. When driving on the highway, the engine showed no problems, and operated quite well at a sustained speed of 65 mph. However, when climbing a relatively steep hill, the car could not reach speeds above 50 for the first 2/3 of the hill. In fact, it felt as if the car may completely stall at some points. Upon reaching a certain speed while still on the hill the stalling stopped, and the car again accelerated without any problems. What could this be? I'm on my way to the mechanics tomorrow and I would like to hear what you have to say. (I'm thinking is has something to do with the fuel pump and/or the O2 sensors. Thanks in advance for your help. sounds to me like an ignition problem such as a bad spark plug wire. when was the last time you had a decent tune up? Who's at fault for car accident? My husband was driving in slushy snow when he came up over a hill with little sight distance (maybe 10 ft) when he saw a car backing up because he couldn't make it up the hill. The country road is not a full 2 lanes, maybe equivalent to 1 1/2. The other car was in the middle of the road and stopped and put on his flashers when he saw my car coming. My husband attempted to avoid the car, but couldn't. The other guys insurance co. is putting us 100% at fault. Daewoo . How to Check for a Bad CV JointConstant Velocity Joints, or CV joints, provide greater smoothness than universal joints in the drivelines of vehicles. Unlike universal joints, CV joints can resolve drive-axle torque through unequal angles at the ends of their shafts. They are therefore preferred for front wheel drive vehicles where the wheels that propel the car are also the ones that turn left and right to steer it. CV joints are more complicated, though, so they do wear and fail over time. This is how to check for a bad CV joint. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Jack Jackstands Wheel removal tools Step by Step : 1 Listen while driving. Cyclical clicking, rasping, or squeaking sounds that seem to be synchronized with the rotation of the wheels, especially at low speeds, could indicate a worn or damaged CV joint. Driveline vibration at highway speeds could also be a sign of worn CV joints. 2 Turn the wheels left and right. Hearing the sound change or increase as you turn the steering wheel while driving slowly can help you isolate a bad CV joint. A good way to do this test is in an empty parking lot next to a large building with the driver's window open. The building will amplify and focus any unusual sounds. 3 Visually check the joints and their protective boots. The outer CV joints wear more quickly than the inner ones next to the transaxle. This is because the outer joints are exercised far more vigorously as they articulate through the steering angle of the front wheels. If you suspect the left CV joint, turn the wheels fully to the left with the car parked. Inspect the rubber accordion boot that protects the joint. If it is split or heavily cracked, the joint will soon fail from lack of grease or contamination with dirt and water. At least that one joint will need to be replaced. To check the right side joint, turn the wheels fully to the right to see the boot. 4Use jack stands to prevent damage or injuryfallen jack stand image by Joyce Wilkes from Fotolia.com Manually check the shafts. Even if the boots are in good condition, there could still be a worn joint within. Hoist the vehicle on a lift, or jack the wheel in question off the ground. Place the jack under the lower suspension arm to maintain the drive angle. Remove the wheel use jack stands for safety. Grasp the shaft next to the joint and try to shake it. A bad joint will click or there will be looseness in it. 5 Get a second and third opinion. If there is still a doubt after the above checks, have at least two shops check the CV joints. Don't identify which one you suspect. If there really is a CV joint issue, the shops will independently agree on which one it is. Tips & Warnings If the car has one bad CV joint, chances are the opposite side is getting close to needing replacement too. If the joints need replacement, have the front suspension checked; there are some labor savings possible if further replacement is needed. If seeking professional help, always compare findings unless you have a good history with your mechanic. Always use jack stands when jacking a car to prevent damage and injury. Daewoo . How to Replace a CV Joint in a 1995 Mazda 626The CV axle on a 1995 Mazda 626 transfers the engine horsepower from the transaxle to the front wheels. Each CV axle contains two CV joints--one at each end. The CV joint acts much like a human wrist as it allows the axle to swing as it turns when the wheel are turned in either direction. The inner CV joint slides in or out, allowing the CV axle to stretch as the steering is turned. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stand 3/8-inch drive ratchet Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets Set of wrenches ½-inch drive ratchet Set of ½-inch drive sockets Large common screwdriver-type pry bar Tie rod separator tool Hammer Step by Step : 1 Raise the side of the car to be worked on and support it under the frame with a jack stand. Remove the wheel, using a ½-inch drive socket. Remove the large CV axle nut in the center of the hub, using the appropriate ½-inch drive socket. 2 Remove the bolt securing the lower control arm to the hub, using a 3/8-inch drive socket. Insert the tie rod separator tool between the hub and the lower control arm ball joint. Strike the tool with a hammer until the two separate. 3 Lift the hub up and clear of the lower ball joint stud. Use your thumb to push the CV joint shaft out of the hub. Move the hub toward the rear of the fenderwell away from the CV axle. 4 Pry the CV axle out of the transaxle by inserting the blade of a pry bar between the CV axle and the transaxle, and with a quick pull on the bar, the axle will pop out of the transaxle. 5 Insert the new CV axle into the transaxle as far as it will go. It will stop about halfway in, due to the circlip on the shaft that enters the transaxle. Pull the axle back about ½ inch then slam it in. The circlip will enter the transaxle. The circlip holds the axle so it will not come out. 6 Pull the hub back and away from the car enough to insert the axle shaft into the hub from behind. Push in on the hub while holding the CV axle with the other hand. Push the shaft all the way through the hub. 7 Lift the hub and place it over the lower ball joint stud. Insert the ball joint stud into the hub, insert the ball joint bolt and tighten it with a 3/8-inch drive socket. Install the large CV axle shaft nut and tighten it with the appropriate ½-inch drive socket. Install the front wheel.
